Daraja La Amani Project

Daraja La Amani (Swahili for Bridges of Peace) is an initiative by the Kenyan NVC community, registered as Tuzungumze Amani Foundation, to offer NVC training to local Kenyan communities in Nairobi, Kiambu, Uasin Gishu, Homa Bay and Marsabit counties. This initiative was driven by the cancellation of the IIT KENYA 2020 due to the outbreak of the Covid-19 pandemic. The main objective of the initiative is to enhance NVC awareness in Kenya at the grassroots level. In addition, that initiative will also support certification candidates to gain deeper understanding and integration of NVC in daily life, hence supporting their certification journey. Moreover, the outbreak of the coronavirus in Kenya has led to "a new normal", with schools closed, people losing jobs, a rise in domestic violence, and increased teenage pregnancies, among other social challenges. This initiative comes in as a learning of how we can use NVC in response to the challenges being experienced. We intend to have these trainings in December 2020. We are however open to whatever changes that may arise in response to the corona situation in the country.

“After the 2007/2008 Post Election Violence that affected so many people in Kenya due to the inter-tribal clashes, 12 young people with NVC consciousness from different tribes across Kenya came together with an objective of finding strategies for co-existence. Since then we have had numerous NVC trainings in our local regions. NVC gives us the consciousness of co-existence and acknowledgement of the universality of our human needs.”
